Helena and I designed the Hennabecca bag when we couldn't find a bag which worked effectively to simplify our lives. As new mothers, workers, frequent fliers (well Helena anyway) and occasional keep-fit enthusiasts (!) we were spending too much time moving stuff between bags, or unpacking and repacking, and spending too much money duplicating 'stuff' across several bags so as to never be caught short without a nappy, or our shower gel for after swimming.
As we had the luxury of a clean slate, we could incorporate all sorts of nifty features in the design of the Hennabecca. So large zip pullers, semi transparent mesh pockets and fully flat opening for easy rummaging were in, as was an easy-to-access front pocket for one-handed retrieval of keys, passport and phone (so essential with a baby on the hip or child holding the other hand!) The inner pockets had to be fully detachable and useful as mini-bags in their own right, and the strap had to be extendable to fit around the pushchair handles or luggage trolley.
We originally sold the Hennabecca primarily as a baby changing bag, for mothers who were looking for a stylish yet uber-practical alternative to the changing rucksacks and baby bags available on the high street. As a baby bag, the Hennabecca has the advantage that the internal pockets (stuffed with nappies, snacks, toys etc) can be taken out and left with whoever's looking after the children, whilst the rest of the bag goes to work, the gym or shopping. The compact size of the detachable pockets is also great when on changing duty in a cramped space (the rest of the bag doesn't need to come into the cubicle.)
However feedback from our lovely customers alerted us to the fact that many Hennabeccas had nothing to do with babies and were being bought purely as stylish carry-on flight bags (the dimensions of the bag were ideal during last year's size restrictions) or as the perfect work/overnight bag by those who travel on business (leave the detachable pockets filled with your toiletries in the hotel room and there is plenty of space left for a small laptop or for conference paperwork...) And many of our customers (and indeed ourselves) are still using their Hennabeccas on a daily basis, though the need for nappies is now past.
